UCC’s mission as a non-profit is to build a community that brings together students from China studying in the USA, help them adjust to the drastically different American culture and encourage them to seize their study abroad experience beyond academics so that they are workplace ready for the global economy. In an effort to encourage Chinese students to engage with their community and focus on EQ not just IQ, UCC initiated the “Rising Star Award.” The Rising Star Award is for the student from China who, 1) attends an accredited university full-time in the U.S.A., 2) has served his or her community & 3) has demonstrated the greatest potential for leadership and community impact.

jwuAfter reviewing over 102 nominees nationwide, UCC presented the $5500 grand prize to the 2015 Rising Star Award winner John Wu from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. John truly exemplifies a ‘Rising Star’ because he is majoring in Astronomy but has started an Astronomy Club group in his hometown of Shanghai where over 1500 local members have joined.  He has continued to nurture this club by bringing astronomers from China, U.S. to engage with his local members and most importantly inspire teenagers to be involved with many disciplines within the field including astronomers’ perspective on climate change.  His passion for this field along with sharing his knowledge is evident.  Back on campus, he has volunteered as a Chinese Group Facilitator in language exchange and study abroad programs where he organized a group of his American classmates from his astronomy class to accompany him to China.  He is active in several student clubs such as Astronomy Club, NASA’s Night Sky Program and his goal is to continue his research and studies on Astronomy’s role in climate change.  John received from UCC a Workforce Ready resume and interview preparation package, and membership to Asia Society’s Young Professional Membership, as well as from Asian Art Museum 4 complimentary tickets.
