Importance of Partnerships and Relationship Building

As 2017 arrived, my visit to Asia made me realize how many options Chinese students now have. They can decide on US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, or Taiwan.  Why will they stay loyal to the USA especially given the tone of our new President towards immigrants and H1B?

Partnerships and relationships are more important than ever. Every other country around the world emphasized relationships and partnerships but we tend to focus on the tasks.  If more US campuses can nurture relationships and partnerships better, they can build pipelines for student recruitment without relying on third parties but more importantly, the relationships and that word of mouth, means the difference between selecting your campus over another campus.

I am often amazed by how many campuses are not maximizing on partnership and relationship building.

Not only should you look into your student body and alumni, but faculty, administrators who have lived/studied abroad or are of immigrant backgrounds and local community organizations and businesses that would have inroads to China.

Once a student from China arrives on campus, these relationship and partnership will build a strong support system for your students.  Remember, it takes a village to help a student, especially if they are an international student new to our ways of doing things.
