Tips on interviewing prospective students from China

How can you tell if your prospective student from China can demonstrate their mastery of the English language beyond standardized tests?

Interview them!

1) Face to face interviews are the best and you get a more natural sense of the candidate. You can also customize the questions for your institution. However, some students are shy which can appear that they have poor English.

2) For schools who have the manpower or someone in admissions that can go to China or has the bandwidth to interview prospective students, do so.  All you need is a Skype account but again, shy students may not perform well in these interviews.

3) If you do not have the manpower, look into your alumni for help on conducting interviews in China.

4) If you do not have a structured alumni interview program or staff to do the interview, outsource to a third party.

My company, USA College Connection, conducts interviews for companies and schools.  We work closely to tailor the interview so that the employer or admissions officer has a good sense of the candidate’s English aptitude and fluency.  UCC does interviews customized for one institution or one interview that the candidate can be applied too all applications.  Does your institution what a customized interview or can your institution accept a pre-recorded interview that is more generic for more than one application/institution?

5) Have students pay for the interviews if you need to do them via webcam or third party. Pre-recorded interviews are good when shy students do not represent themselves well in a live interview. Make sure the third party knows how to calm the candidate down and get a true representation of the candidate’s English level.

6) Think about the questions you would like to ask candidates.
